Spherical roller bearings provide tolerance to heavy loads, even with misalignment or shaft deflection. Spherical roller bearings adapt well to axial thrusting in either direction and are also tolerant of heavy shock loads. The name “spherical bearing” is due to the spherical shape of the outer ring raceway. This geometry allows the inner ring to tilt slightly within the outer ring, without significant loss of useful bearing life, an effect which provides the tolerance to misalignment in the protected equipment. Spherical roller bearings are unequalled in their capacity for high loads and their tolerance to shock loads, but have limited speed capabilities.
